Sainte-Suzanne and the fortress of Lassay
Listed among the most beautiful villages in France, Sainte-Suzanne is built on a rocky spur, protected by its ramparts and its Romanesque keep. It resisted William the Conqueror for three years. Further north, Lassay Castle, flanked by eight round towers, is one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture in France. A visit that dives into the imagination of another time.
Jublains and the Coëvrons
In Jublains, the archaeological site reveals a remarkably preserved Gallo-Roman fortress, theatre and baths. A museum accompanies the visit. Around, the Coëvrons hills, punctuated by Évron and its Romanesque basilica, offer lovely hikes. Mont des Avaloirs, the highest point of western France at 416 metres, is worth the detour for the clear view from its belvedere tower.
Craon, Mezangers and other gems
In the west, Craon Castle, a classical 18th-century residence, is open to the public with its English park. In Mezangers, Rocher Castle combines Gothic and Renaissance charms. All stops within an hour of one another. On Lyad, Mayenne members share their favourite castles and villages: it is up to you to find someone to plan the next escape with.
